While we do have France later down our list of the warmest countries in Europe in December, Monaco is a sovereign city-state and deserves its own inclusion.

Located on the exquisite French Riviera, temperatures can reach up to 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit), which, if you are in the cold, is a very welcome break.

    9. Montenegro – a lesser-travelled Mediterranean spot

Much like spots ten and eight on our list of the warmest countries in Europe in December, it is not boiling hot. However, with highs of 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit), it is well worth a visit.

    8. Croatia – one of Europe’s most popular destinations

Croatia is fast becoming one of the most popular Mediterranean countries to visit, and it is easy to see why.

The fact it is December shouldn’t put you off this stunning country, as many of its towns can get quite mild. For example, the coastal enclave of Dubrovnik can even reach highs of 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit).

    7. France – to the south

France is another European destination you can head to if you want some heat, but we would recommend heading to the south.

Nice, for example, can hit highs of 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), while the Côte D’Azur’s breathtaking coast can be enjoyed at temperatures slightly higher still.

One place that won’t let you down year-round is Italy, which boasts a variety of superb locations this time of year to catch some heat.

In particular, we would recommend Sardinia, which can reach highs of 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) or Cagliari, rich in sun and art alike with lots of architecture to explore.

    5. Greece – welcome December highs of 17 degrees

Kicking off the top five warmest countries in Europe in December is Greece. The Mediterranean island is another of the continent’s most famous places to holiday in.

Taking it another step forward from Italy, the likes of Crete can reach very nice December highs of 17 degrees Celsius (62 degrees Fahrenheit).

    4. Malta – temperature has never dropped below zero

The fact that temperatures have never dropped below zero alone should be enough to attract you towards Malta in December. It is quite the starting point for the small island country.

In December time, you may want to swap the ice and snow for the welcoming weather and heat of 16 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit) here.

    3. Cyprus – the perfect December break

Weather-wise, you are certain to escape the clutches of the cold weather here. At its peak, the sun will provide you with between 19 degrees and 20 degrees Celsius (66 and 68 Fahrenheit) heat.

Our penultimate selection on our list of the warmest countries in Europe in December sits right next to our winner, both on the list and geographically.

The historical capital of Lisbon can attract heat of up to 15 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit), while the Madeira Islands can reach a stunning 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).

    1. Spain – hit the islands
