The world’s first space hotel is set to open in 2027. It will feature a gourmet restaurant, bar, and holiday villas available to purchase.
Space travel was once a thought of the far-distant future. However, it’s no longer the stuff of rumours and science fiction.
Now, it’s right around the corner. As well as members of the public getting to spend a few days in a SpaceX vehicle circling Earth and the moon, there are also a few space hotels in the works.
The latest to announce its potential opening date as the world’s first space hotel is Orbital Assembly’s Voyager Station, currently set to welcome guest in 2027.
A Space Odyssey in real life – the world’s first space hotel
What was once only possible in the movies is now seemingly coming to real life. Taking note from science fiction movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar, Voyager Station will make artificial gravity by using centrifugal force.
The world’s first space hotel will take on the shape of a Ferris wheel, spinning in a circle to simulate gravity in its pods.
While its shape and image might differ from hotels here on Earth, its rooms and facilities will be largely familiar to those travelling from our home planet.
The hotel – a luxury resort in space
The world’s first hotel in space is set to be a luxury one. It will be able to accommodate up to 280 guests, with villas available to purchase.
It will also feature a gourmet restaurant, bar, gym, and entertainment centre. Essentially, the makings of a regular luxury resort, just not on Earth.
Plans for the hotel first came to light in 2019 under the name Von Braun Rotating Space Station. However, it has since gone under some major rebranding.
The namesake, Wernher Von Braun, was an aerospace engineer who was crucial to the development of rockets.
However, he worked under the Nazi regime in Germany before moving to America and eventually joining NASA.
Space hotel in 2027 – will there be any delays?
The initial date for the hotel to open was estimated for 2025. In turn, this calls into question the ambitious opening year of 2027, just five years from now.
The delays were apparently caused by the pandemic that rocked the world, COVID-19. Holdups were not attributed to anything to do with technology.
Regardless of the official opening year, space hotels are certainly a thing of the very near future.
Particularly since the Voyager Station is one of the three properties currently in development. The others are Axiom Space’s AxStation and Orion Span’s Aurora Station.
