    You could say that this charming seaside town is the coastal capital of mid-Wales, and it has a lot to offer any visitor, no matter where your interests lie.

    From historical sites and nature trails to charming railways and hidden valleys, this Welsh town has a wide variety of exciting activities, all within easy reach.

    10. Walk the Aberystwyth Pier – a scenic thing to do in town

    Take a walk down the Aberystwyth promenade and venture off to the pier, one of the town’s focal points. The Royal Pier is, in fact, the oldest pier in Wales, dating back to 1865, making it a fascinating place to explore.

    This is also a fantastic place to grab some excellent fish and chips, spot wildlife, and soak up the panoramic views of the coastline.

    Located next to the university on Penglais Hill, this interesting spot is easily accessible from many main attractions.

    Wales is well known for its stunning coastline, which comes with even prettier beaches, and the beaches of Cardigan Bay cannot be missed when in town.

    There are two beaches here, the South Beach and the North Beach, both of which deserve a visit. These beaches are great for families to spend quality time, and the south beach is a fantastic option for a quieter setting.

    History buffs cannot overlook a visit to the most well-known historic monument close to Aberystwyth. Strata Florida Abbey holds a lot of historical significance and dates back to 1164.

    Since then, it has been a Cistercian monastery, linked to royalty, and even destroyed. Today it remains one of the top places to visit near Aberystwyth.

    One of the best and most scenic activities in town is to take on a section of the stunning Ceredigion Coastal Path, which passes through the seafront.

    The trail takes in various beaches, bays, and villages and is one of the most exciting sections of the famous Welsh Coastal Path. If you fancy a little alone time with nature, be sure to walk south of Aberystwyth, where crowds are few.

    If you visit with a car, you must take it upon yourself to enjoy the scenic drive to Elan Valley. The valley is a gorgeous series of dams, twisted roads, and reservoirs which have been built to supply water to the city of Birmingham.

    The drive will take you past all four of the dams, and if you have time, we recommend continuing to the town of Cwmystwyth, which is nestled in the valley a few miles on.

    Constitution Hill is a lovely spot for picnics, sunsets and photography due to its iconic location soaring above the town.

    It is reached by Aberystwyth Cliff Railway and is where many other attractions can be visited, such as the Camera Obscura.

    While Constitution Hill is certainly one of the best things to do in Aberystwyth, getting there is also an exciting journey. The iconic Aberystwyth Cliff Railway takes visitors to the top within minutes.

    This fantastic funicular is an attraction on its own, yet gives the general public access to some of the other top attractions of Aberystwyth as well as beautiful views over the seaside.

    One of the main things to do in Aberystwyth is visiting Aberystwyth Castle, which dates back to the 13th century and has many stories to tell.

    The ruins here can be explored for free, and one of the best things to do is to enjoy a picnic and wait for the superb views over Cardigan Bay.

    Since it has been destroyed, rebuilt, and used for many purposes, you will spend a lot of time here, soaking up the long history of this incredible historic site.

    Cambrian Mountains: Getting out into nature is what Wales is all about, and Aberystwyth is very close to the northern part of this range. This is a fantastic place to hike, enjoy nature, and escape the crowds.

    Cofiwch Dryweryn graffiti: This is one of the top landmarks in Wales and is near Aberystwyth, making it well worth a visit. The famous graffiti has been located on the main A487 road since the 1960s.

    Devil’s Bridge: A train ride on the Rheidol Railway to the three famous bridges at Devil’s Bridge, along with the famous waterfalls of Afon Mynach, is by far one of the greatest day trips from Aberystwyth.

    Day trip to New Quay: If you want a peaceful retreat down the coast, make your way to New Quay, which is one of the best seaside towns in Wales and is known to be a great place for dolphin-watching.
