Certain destinations are just simply not all they’re hyped up to be. So, if you plan to visit any of the following, prepare to be underwhelmed.

EUROPE'S most overrated CITIES: prepare to be underwhelmed.

So, you’re planning your once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe, wondering which cities and destinations you need to tick off your bucket list.

We want to help you save your time and avoid disappointment, so we’re excited to share with you a list of Europe’s most overrated cities that don’t live up to the hype.

Whether through over-tourism, commercialisation, or pollution, many of these destinations have lost the unique charm and character that made them the globally regarded spots they are today.

Opinions differ regarding what constitutes an ‘overrated’ destination, depending on personal experience and travel preferences. Yet, certain destinations are frequently reported to disappoint travellers expecting something different.

So, if you’re short on time and wondering which destinations might be worth skipping, read on. Here are Europe’s most overrated cities, which offer little but disappointment.

    Table of Contents
    • Certain destinations are just simply not all they're hyped up to be. So, if you plan to visit any of the following, prepare to be underwhelmed.
      • 5. Santorini, Greece – a once idyllic Greek island turned Instagrammer central
      • 4. Barcelona, Spain – another busy tourist city
      • 3. London, England – far from the historic English city you see in the movies
      • 2. Paris, France – the reality of the French capital
      • 1. Venice, Italy – the Italian city that lost its charm

    5. Santorini, Greece – a once idyllic Greek island turned Instagrammer central

Located in the Cycladic group of islands in the Aegean Sea off the mainland of Greece, Santorini is, for us, one of Europe’s most overrated cities – or islands.

Known for its picturesque white buildings with blue-domed roofs set against a glistening blue ocean backdrop, this spot should be as dreamy and idyllic.

However, social media has taken its toll on this once-sleepy Greek island, turning it into another spot for photoshoots. There’s no denying that the setting and surroundings are picturesque.

You might imagine spending a few days exploring this quiet, sleepy island, enjoying Greek frappes in local coffee shops, and enjoying the view from the stunning caldera.

Nonetheless, the influx of tourism in recent years has torn away the authenticity of this beautiful island, which many believe to have been the original Atlantis.

Instead of a peaceful escape, you’ll be greeted by queues of tourists lining up for pictures at the island’s most famous spots, overpriced cafes serving inauthentic Greek cuisine, and luxury hotels blocking the views for the average visitor.

    4. Barcelona, Spain – another busy tourist city

Barcelona is rich in history and culture, with plenty of incredible sights to see and things to do. However, it is also one of the busiest European cities, making visiting it not the most enjoyable experience.

In historical areas such as Las Ramblas, you’ll be met with many overpriced tourist shops selling cheap souvenirs that take away from the character of the inner city.

In addition, Barcelona is rife with scams and pickpockets. Constantly having to be on your guard, watching over your shoulder to protect your belongings, takes away much of the enjoyment of exploring.

Commercialisation, with a growing number of chains taking over the inner city, and rising costs also detract from the authenticity of this beautiful Spanish city.

    3. London, England – far from the historic English city you see in the movies

Movies such as Notting Hill and Love, Actually create a beautiful, romantic picture of the English capital, where the sun shines on pristine, colourful houses and streets lined with blossom trees and cute, independent bakeries and bookshops.

Unfortunately, this is not quite the case. London is primarily a busy and industrialised city defined by grey buildings, a polluted river, and some of the most overpriced places to eat, drink, and sleep.

While London does have its charm in specific ways, boasting plenty of history and access to everything you could need, it is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most overrated cities.

    2. Paris, France – the reality of the French capital

The French capital has many names, including the City of Love and the City of Lights. Regarded by many (and perpetuated by Hollywood) as one of the world’s most romantic destinations, Paris enjoys a place in the hearts of hopeless romantics worldwide.

However, many who visit this iconic European city end up disappointed. Yes, the Eiffel Tower is incredible to witness, and the history of Notre Dame is remarkable. However, visiting the city leaves a lot to be desired.

In reality, a visit to Paris will involve crowded streets, expensive attractions, restaurants, hotels, and a whole host of scams targeting tourists. Not so much the romantic image that popular culture makes this city out to be.

    1. Venice, Italy – the Italian city that lost its charm

The Italian island city of Venice tops our list of Europe’s most overrated cities. While this city offers its own unique beauty and charm, overtourism and pollution have diminished the historic charm that made it so famous.

Commercialisation, with an influx of chain restaurants, hotels, and shops, diminishes the authenticity of this Italian city. Meanwhile, excessive prices can make it feel like an inaccessible travel destination.

In addition, growing environmental concerns, such as rising water levels and polluted waterways caused by huge cruise liners, make the city one of Europe’s most overrated destinations.
