In the recent United Nations World Happiness Report, countries with the happiest people, many of whom may never have crossed your mind, seem to have the secret to a long and happy life. But what do they all have in common?

In this article, we will explore each country that made the list to understand why they have been deemed the happiest countries in the world for 2024.

    Table of Contents
    • In a world of continuous chaos, it's always refreshing to have some good news. Recently, a rundown of the happiest countries in the world for 2024 was announced, and the results may surprise you.
      • 10. Australia – a country that boosts a relaxed lifestyle
      • 9. Switzerland – one of the world's most prosperous countries
      • 8. Luxembourg – one of Europe's smallest countries
      • 7. Norway – a range of excellent benefits
      • 6. The Netherlands – freedom to make life choices
      • 5. Israel – a strong sense of community
      • 4. Sweden – an enviable work-life balance
      • 3. Iceland – a magical landscape
      • 2. Denmark – one of the smallest wealth gaps worldwide
      • 1. Finland – sauna culture and connection to nature

    10. Australia – a country that boosts a relaxed lifestyle

It’s no surprise that Australia has made the list. After all, it is a country that attracts plenty of immigrants who are eager to get a piece of the pie.

With its stunning coastal landscapes, relaxed way of life, and excellent weather, Australia boasts high salaries, life expectancy, and employment rates.

    9. Switzerland – one of the world’s most prosperous countries

Switzerland is not the only prosperous country to make this list, but there are a few reasons this country is considered one of the world’s happiest, and it’s not just the money.

With a picture-perfect landscape, a stable economy, and a long-standing tradition of neutrality, Switzerland is setting an example for countries worldwide.

    8. Luxembourg – one of Europe’s smallest countries

Luxembourg is one of Europe‘s smallest countries, but according to the report, it’s also one of the world’s happiest.

The country first made it to the top list in 2020 and has retained its position. But how? Luxembourg seems to have it all, with high gross salaries, long life expectancy, social freedom, and a stunning environment.

    7. Norway – a range of excellent benefits

There’s more to happiness than money, but it sure does help. Norway is, of course, one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Its happiness comes down to the excellent standard of living, trust in the people in power, free healthcare, and social equality, to name a few factors.

    6. The Netherlands – freedom to make life choices

Like other countries listed here, the Netherlands is one of the happiest countries in the world thanks to its strong sense of community and immense freedom to make life choices.

Australia and the Netherlands are the only countries with a population of more than 15 million that share a similar level of happiness.

    5. Israel – a strong sense of community

Israel may be one of the most surprising additions to this list, given its ongoing war with Gaza. Yet, this country has never been below the 14th spot since the first report came out a decade ago.

So, how is a country currently involved in a war with its surrounding neighbours happy? Israel is a country that has a strong sense of community, where people can rely on each other, and this evokes a strong sense of happiness.

    4. Sweden – an enviable work-life balance

The Nordic countries have secured the top spots this year, with Sweden taking fourth position. You might ask, why are they such a happy nation?

This country is often ranked as one of the happiest countries worldwide thanks to its enviable work-life balance and strong social support networks. So, even with the high taxes, the citizens have many benefits.

    3. Iceland – a magical landscape

Many people consider Iceland to be one of the most peaceful and happiest countries of all time, and this is a reputation that Iceland has held for a very long period.

This is because of their remote location, fantastic environmental landscape, low taxes, and accessible healthcare. We also have to mention that ten per cent of Icelanders have written and published books, a passion that evokes happiness nationwide.

    2. Denmark – one of the smallest wealth gaps worldwide

Denmark is no stranger to the top position and has been among the happiest countries in the world since 2012. But what is their secret?

They credit their happiness to having a solid work-life balance, healthcare, and their environment. It also helps that their wealth gap is one of the smallest in the world, so Denmark’s sense of equality is very strong.

    1. Finland – sauna culture and connection to nature

That’s right, Finland is the happiest country in the world in 2024, despite its extreme climate.

In a country with long, dark, and frigid temperatures in the winter, it may come as a surprise that the nation has taken the top position.

Finland is a country with a high standard of living, a thriving sauna culture and a deep connection with nature, which keeps them more than content.

So, do these countries hold some of the many secrets to happiness? From a strong sense of community to a high standard of living and a deep connection with nature, it’s clear that these countries have their priorities in order.
