Believe it or not, Medellin was once one of the world’s most dangerous cities, but don’t let that put you off. What you see today is a vibrant, progressive city with a lot to offer, and one of the must-see places in Colombia is situated at the heart of this ever-changing destination.

Comuna 13, also known as San Javier, is a place you must visit because of its vibrant street art, live performances, and electric atmosphere. Today, it is hard to believe that this once very isolated and segregated neighbourhood was as dangerous as it was.

As perhaps the most visited attraction in Medellin, Comuna 13 attracts up to a staggering 6,000 visitors per day, so you can guarantee this place is always alive and kicking, making it a fun place to stroll around.

    4. Salento – food, coffee, and nature

Known as the heart of the coffee region, Salento is a joy to explore, with its narrow streets and colourful houses. This town is also so popular because of the surrounding scenery, which comprises lush, green rolling hills and coffee plantations.

It is a world away from other parts of the country.

Of course, this is a top destination for coffee lovers who are eager to learn about the process of Colombian coffee and taste the good stuff.

Salento is a great hub for visiting other notable attractions in the area, like the Cocora Valley, which has the tallest palm trees in the world. Chocolate lovers will be happy to hear that cacao farms in the area produce world-class chocolate.

So, for food, coffee, and nature, you must visit Salento.

    3. El Peñón de Guatapé – a truly remarkable natural landmark

This landmark has to be one of the most outstanding places you will see when visiting the country, which is why it is one of the must-see places in Colombia.

Located a few hours from Medellin, this incredible rock formation soars above the stunning lake district where Pablo Escobar once had his enormous holiday mansion.

Climbing the 708 steps to the 656ft (200 m) height takes around thirty minutes, but it is well worth the effort because of the views of the vast waterways and islands surrounding it.

As you can imagine, this is one of the top attractions in Colombia for its uniqueness and beauty. There are also many colourful murals, souvenir shops, and busy restaurants at the base of the rock for visitors to enjoy.

    2. Caño Cristales – the river of seven colours

If you haven’t already guessed, Colombia, one of the best countries to visit in South America, is incredibly diverse, and Caño Cristales is another prime example of this.

Known as the ‘River of Seven Colours,’ Caño Cristales was discovered in 1969 by a group of farmers and is today one of the must-see places in Colombia.

Located in the Macarena Mountain range, this extraordinary natural landmark boasts an array of diverse colours, from green to vibrant red. Many have described it as ‘the most beautiful river in the world.’

If that wasn’t enough, the area has plenty of cave paintings, waterfalls, and pools to discover, making it a popular attraction for those looking to get off the beaten path while visiting the country.

A world away from the coffee region or the lake district lies the tropical Caribbean coast, and Tayrona National Park is at the heart of it all.

Nature lovers and hikers are attracted to this area for the park’s scenic trails, passing by some of the most beautiful white sandy coves, where you can take a dip to cool down.

Moreover, the park has archaeological ruins of an ancient city to discover and excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving in the area. This is a hub for activity and one of the best places for contemplation, relaxation, and enjoying fantastic beach time.

As you can see, Colombia is a country that appeals to all kinds of travellers with varied interests. So, whether you are a food lover, a cultural enthusiast, or a devoted hiker, Colombia aims to tick all the boxes.
