Travelling is a great way to experience new cultures, but it is wise to check the local rules before arriving – especially in the case of Qatar

10 things NOT to do in QATAR (that could get you jailed).

Qatar is a small but bustling Middle Eastern country with many exciting things to offer. Still, before jumping straight into all the famous landmarks to see and activities to do, you must familiarize yourself with the country’s laws, just as you would anywhere else.

While Qatar is one of the safest places to travel, despite what may be happening in nearby countries, there are still many strict rules to abide by, which is what we will unveil here.

Let us guide you towards a safe and fulfilling trip with these ten things not to do in Qatar, so take note.

    Table of Contents

One of the main things not to do in Qatar is to criticize other religions, such as Christianity, Islam or Judaism.

Still, it is also worth knowing that it is illegal to worship non-Islamic faiths or to try to convince others of alternative religions. This can lead to prison sentences of up to seven years.

    9. Unmarried couples – this can lead to the arrest

Just like in many other Middle Eastern countries, it is not allowed to have relationships outside of marriage.

If you are an unmarried couple that plans to live together if you decide to emigrate, it is worth knowing that this is illegal and seen as a crime in Qatar, and can lead to arrest, so take note.

    8. Offensive behaviour – asking for jail time

One of the things not to do in Qatar is bad behaviour.

No matter the situation, always try to stay calm, as offensive behaviour can lead to harsh punishments. By offensive behaviour, we mean swearing, yelling, making rude gestures or mocking officials, which is certainly not the way to make friends in a foreign country.

    7. Don’t be drunk in public – pace yourself in a licensed place

One of the top things not to do in Qatar is to be drunk and disorderly in public; even if you have obtained alcohol from a licensed bar, you can still be imprisoned for up to six months if caught causing a scene on the streets.

    6. Always pay your bills – settle your finances

If you have forgotten to pay your bill or a cheque bounces when you are due to leave the country, this can lead to significant issues in Qatar.

Financial crime is taken very seriously, so ensure you have no outstanding balances before travelling back home or to your next destination.

    5. The LGBTQ+ community – know the laws

Similarly to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern countries and cities, homosexuality is considered a crime in Qatar, and public displays of affection between same-sex couples are strongly discouraged from saving any potential problems.

You can run the risk of being fined or, worse still, being imprisoned for up to three years. So always be cautious in this case.

    4. Taking Illegal items in your luggage – double check your bags

One of the things not to do in Qatar is taking illegal items in your suitcase.

This may seem obvious, but it may not be if you aren’t familiar with what is illegal in Qatar. Firstly, don’t pack anything containing pork, do not bring alcohol into the country, or religious-themed books or electronic cigarettes, which can get you in a lot of trouble – before you’ve even left the airport.

    3. Photography – always be camera aware

One of the biggest things not to do in Qatar is to take photos of specific places, such as religious establishments, military zones or even construction sites. Always get permission if you are unsure, or steer clear of taking photos if you are uncertain of the rules.

    2. Avoid PDA – keep your hands to yourself

PDA or public displays of affection are typical in most European countries. If you are used to this, it may come naturally to you when travelling.

It is advised to be aware that this is strictly forbidden in Qatar, and hugging, kissing, or even holding hands can get you in a lot of trouble.

    1. Littering – always find a bin

One of the things not to do in Qatar is littering.

While we would hope no one would litter in any country, it is still worth mentioning that littering comes with all sorts of punishments in Qatar since this is a sign of going against the strict hygiene laws in the country.

Littering in Qatar can mean spitting on the paths or tossing a tissue on the ground.

Now that you have gotten your head around ten things not to do in Qatar, it will give you an idea of how to have a more enjoyable and safe trip while knowing the main rules of the country.
